Renovation of the historic California Memorial Stadium at UC Berkeley, originally built in 1923, involved extensive historic preservation, needed upgrades for staff and visitors, and a complete seismic retrofit. To achieve the project’s three elements, the structure of the stadium was removed while the historic facade was preserved through temporary bracing system. Special structural systems were built to allow the two halves of the seating bowl, bisected by the Hayward fault, to move separately during a major seismic event. Additions included new concourses for restaurants, visitor boxes, clubs, press boxes and offices. CCM provided oversight and project controls for the project.
